Europe Journal (Part 1)

"I came to Geneva to kill a sovereign, with object of giving an example to those who suffer and those who do nothing to improve their social position; it did not matter to me who the sovereign was whom I should kill..."

The 25-year old Italian anarchist Luigi Lucheni speaks these words after stabbing the beautiful and beloved empress Elizabeth in Edward Morgan Alborough De Burgh's book, Elizabeth, Empress of Austria: A Memoir.

In the spring of 2018, my friends and I embarked on a road trip from Budapest Hungary through Austria to Czech Republic and back again. Each place we visited was drenched in the historic drama that surrounded the Hapsburg Monarchy, providing a texturally rich environment to photograph.

More photos to come in Part 2.
