Godzilla Head Hotel Photography Book

Alex’s first introduction to Japan came by way of Kabukichō, a colorful, seedy, claustrophobic entertainment district saturated in maze-like layers of smoky bars and unpredictable characters. The frequency of surprises on a Tokyo night is enough to make you forget what you had been doing just moments before. First impressions were quickly contrasted by the quiet, neutral color palette of Kyoto. The contrast throughout the country was infinitely engaging. Environments were both minimal and maximal. The local fashion was either modestly traditional or expressively unique. The energy – either peacefully simple or intensely chaotic. The tensions created by the juxtaposition of these opposites were a photographer’s (sleepless) dream.

This book documents Alex’s journey through Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka in the fall of 2018.

T-Shirt Design

The t-shirt that would accompany the Godzilla Head Hotel photography book needed to capture the excitement and chaos that was felt walking through Kabukichō, Tokyo for the first time. A base graphic was designed in pink to reference the aggressive neon Tokyo street lights and then paint was thrown across each shirt to replicate the unpredictable, anxious energy of the city. The paint also makes each shirt one of a kind.
